Stepmother's Psychotherapy Group

Most stepmothers have high hopes and the best intentions for their new families, but experience has shown that more is needed to meet the challenges inherent in taking one’s place in an already-established family. The Stepmother’s Group provides a setting for support, interaction and education on a range of issues faced by stepmothers. From learning to develop ex-spouse relationships to countering a child’s rebellion to creating new family traditions, group guides stepmothers in understanding and managing the dynamics of their demanding roles. Topics include:

  • What constitutes a healthy stepfamily and how it is created.
  • Effective ways to manage the stepmother/child relationship.
  • Discussing parenting issues with your spouse.
  • Finding your place in an already-established family system.
  • Creating new family memories and traditions.
  • Resolving hurt feelings & dealing with blame.

While stepmothers face some of the same issues that stepfathers face, both part-time and full-time stepmothers have a more difficult role in the stepfamily and are often expected to be more involved with their stepchild due to socialization pressures (being a mother), societal expectations, and expectations from their husband. Joining the Stepmother Psychotherapy Group can be helpful in working out frustrations and problems in the stepmother role.
